Two years after her beloved husband's death, Sally Lightfoot, 50, is ready to age gracefully. With added chocolate.

Her friend's advice to get out of the house and lose her 'wididity', her born-again virginity, before it's too late is firmly dismissed. Nobody can replace Dom. And why would she want all the dating fuss, bother and trauma that her daughter Ami is going through? With added flabby bits?

But Sally hadn't reckoned on meeting Loro, a Leonard Cohen busker who sings Suzanne to the tourists on the Greek island of Hydra. Realising that if she wants something she has to go for it, Sally finally plucks up the courage to leave her lonely comfort zone to face the possibility of humiliation and rejection square on. She sets herself up for a fall. Will he? Or won't he?

An emotional novel about love, death and loneliness that will bring tears of sadness and joy. Perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes, Eleanor Oliphant and Leonard Cohen.

'A beautiful life interrupted then healed by the songs of Leonard Cohen.' BLOGCRITICS

'One minute this book has the reader laughing out loud, the next we are sobbing. This is a finely-written novel that deserves to be a bestseller.' JACQUI LOFTHOUSE, The Writing Coach

'A wonderful look at finding yourself again after the death of a loved one. I would recommend this book for reading and book clubs. It is insightful and delightful, full of thoughtful dialogue and exceptional clarity.' LESLIE WRIGHT, The Huffington Post, Blogcritics, Seattlepi, Tic Toc.

'I devoured this book. I just kept coming back and back and back to it. I finally MADE myself leave it at home, so it would last longer. Other times, I got to sleep much later than planned.. just one more paragraph, page, and chapter. Laughter feels good late at night. So does empathy. Last night I finished it before my cats got fed.' ELIZABETH BACON-SMITH, Leonard Cohen Forum

The lower starred reviews here seem to be by people disappointed because the book is not what they expect. It's not easy for a book that crosses genres to find its correct place. Does one very funny scene make it a comedy? No. Does half the book dealing with a possible romance make it a romance? No. This book has humour and romantic aspects, but it is most correctly women's fiction or contemporary fiction because that's where it will find readers that will appreciate it. Only when we remove our expectations can we read what is actually before us and evaluate it for what it is, not for what we think it should be.

'The Widows To Do List' is a moving, thought-provoking and occasionally funny story about a recently widowed woman in her fifties as she tries to come to terms with her new status. Sally comes across as very real, which makes her easy to relate to. She mothered two children--now grown and left home--and loved her husband, but an accident took him away and left her grief stricken.

The majority of the story takes place one year after Dom's death. Sally is managing by making a list of things to achieve, as suggested by a book on being a widow, and slowly working towards achieving each thing on the list. But Sally's old friend Ramone, thinks the list is ridiculous and suggests some alternatives, one is to have sex as soon as possible, because a widow, having been with one man for so long, is somewhat like a virgin. It's so long since she dated anyone that it's like starting at the beginning again.

Sally doesn't like being alone, but she doesn't want to date anyone either until someone comes along who interests her, then her insecurities come out in force.

The author has referred to the book as a romantic comedy, but I think it's more than that. There is some romance and some comedy, but the book is not about the romance, it's about a woman finding herself. There are funny parts--the scene where she goes into a sex shop and sees rows of willys had tears rolling down my cheeks--but overall the subject matter is reflective, at least for a woman like myself who has been married as long as Sally had. I empathised with Sally from the beginning and found myself wondering how it would feel to be alone after so long as a couple. Sally is also very much a mother and her concern for her children is something that all mothers will be able to relate to.

Ms Zia writes excellent prose with keen insight. I felt as if I was right there in the scenes, and the plot was such that, though the action was very low-key, I couldn't wait to get back to the book to see how Sally was getting on. The success of the book largely hangs on the excellent characterisation, not just of Sally, but of the supporting cast as well, and also the sensitive portrayal of the challenges facing a widow. It lead me to wonder how much our sense of self and social standing are related to our partner.

I recommend this for married and recently widowed women. If you still have a husband, it should remind you not to take him for granted. If your husband is dead, you will find reassurance that you're not the only one that feels the way you do.

I couldnt finish this book. As a widow I only found the sex shop funny. I kept reading but it made me depressed. I had to give it up. Sorry I just didnt get it.
I got through it. There were some poignant moments. Very cut and dried. It was a journey of self-discovery and healing.
I expected this book to actually be a funny book, as that is what it was advertised as being. It was not. It was tepid. I didn't even finish it. I got about three quarters through it and couldn't stand it anymore. Sorry.
The first half of this book I found perhaps a bit too realisitic in that the main character was stuck in her grief and could not move on and thus I cold not move on with her. There were some moments howeve that were funny, inciteful and/or had a bit of spark to them. The end of the holiday was the turning point and just when it looked as though there was a light at the end of the tunnel, the book ended. I enjoyed it, but I wanted less of the painful stuff and more of of the ending.
I can identify with Sally, the main character in this book, because I have a friend who was always 'the second string'. I really enjoyed (if that is the right word) the funeral scene! Sally's idyllic time in the Greek island of Hydra is a wonderful midlife crisis (let us see the Greek god Loro without his shirt one more time! Loved the book!!!
It's a cute story, but it left me hanging. There were too many unanswered questions, and - unless there's a sequil in the works - it'll be like being cut off from what might be an interesting saga.
First few chapters she loses you. As the book goes on it begins to make more sense. There were spots u want to pull it hair out and some scenes your cheering her along. All in all not too bad of a book
